Newspaper analysis

We decided to call our newspaper 'The Generator' which supports our idea that we generate the latest news stories for people to be updated with what's happening around them. The Generator is a tabloid newspaper, which means it is less formal and more appealing to the eyes of younger audiences. It was decided that the masthead was going to be written in white as it makes it clearer to read, but also white refers to goodness or purity which reading the paper fulfils our readers minds with good news.

Our news stories were based on adverts linking to the town of Coulsdon but also includes stories like our main story " Beast from the East " which is related to a wide majority of the public the purpose of our main story was to highlight the major problems the snow had caused. This was why we wanted to make this our main story as it also informs the readers about transport. The headline " Beast from the East " is emphasised by having the letters all in capital letters, which mocks the idea that the smallest amount of snow in Coulsdon has a huge effect on the transport. Our main image portrays a college student struggling to see ahead due to the snow. This was used to fulfil a visual for the audience as they can see how local educational institutes look and also get some idea and understanding to why schools close. In addition we used the weather forecast for the 28th February which enables the readers to be informed of the conditions and whether they may be affected.

We based our next story on sport and more specifically on a local basketball team who celebrates the victory of winning 8 games in a row. We also included a stereotype of only boys play sport. The image for this story refers to a young male youth showing off his skills which gives the audience an idea of what the story may include. "A league on their own" is the strapline of this story which supports the idea of the team winning on their own without a professional coach leading them.

Finally our structure of the newspaper was chosen so that it was easier to read but also achieve the target audience which is the younger audiences attention. We hoped that by reducing our writing this would attract people more as they wouldn't bore people before moving further into reading the newspaper.

  1. The Generator

    Grade: B
Well done, great effort with this piece of work.

Pros: As a group, you have been consistent with the thesis of newspaper front covers in displaying a primary and secondary story, along with relatable images to your stories.
Your logo, like traditional newspaper front covers follows the sizing of ¼ leaving plenty of room for headlines however, still stands out. Date and issue displayed. Overall the design is well formatted and proportioned. Voucher/advertising appeals to all audiences. I like the play on words/personification of the weather storm ‘Beast from the east’

Areas for improvement: The text sizing could have been reconsidered, in order to fit in better with the format of the design/layout. Similarly, the font style and sizing made it hard to read. Your images could have been stronger In terms of angling and editing (changing the composition) choosing either an extreme long shot or extreme close up of the young man and the basketball. League of their own would have sounded better then ‘league on their own’ The colour scheme was interesting however, I feel a more conventional colour would have been stronger. Price and website could have been included in order to make the article look more professional.
