Assassin's creed liberation

Assassin's creed liberation is an action-adventure video game which was developed and published by Ubisoft. It was directed by Julian Gollop and produced by Martin Cape. This game is a franchise (an offshoot) and was originally exclusive for PlayStation Vita, however on October 30th 2012 the game was released alongside Assassin's creed III. The the game was re-released as Assassin's creed: Liberation HD for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.

The game is set between 1765 and 1777, during the French and Indian war in the 18th century, New Orleans, which features the games first female protagonist who is an African-French assasin who goes by the name of Aveline de Grandpré. It can be said that the plot of this game is that it's set in a fictional history of real world events which follows the centuries of the struggles between Assassin's who, with free will fight for peace and the Templers who had desire for peace through control. Additionally the game gives you an opportunity to play multiplayer or as an single player.

Aveline's character is one who tries to free slaves in the late 1700s. In this game she is known to have 3 personas for example:
  • The assassin persona which allows her to access all her weapons but gains a rivalry quickly.
  • The slave persona is weak in combat but can blend in easily and incite riots.
  • Finally, the lady persona is weaker in combat but can have other advantages e.g charming and bribing.
Despite only giving you the option to play as either one of the 3 personas, it doesn't give you an option other than to play as an female character. However, the female character enables positive representations of her being strong and independent but also contrasting in the fact that negative representations are also shown within her 3 personas. For example that her character could be as a weak fighter but also someone who would go to the extreme to flirt with men just to get her way.
It can also be highlighted that negative stereotypes can occur as some outfits of the Assassin's can be sexulised, masculine at times but also the fact that she uses bribery with men to achieve her goals.

Assassin's creed liberation brings the open world, side missions to tackle and shops to buy. In other words the game offers you much more so you still have things to do. It also can be said that the speciality of this game is that it allows you to leap across rooftops, slice throats using your hidden blade and using eagle vision to spot objectives in crowds.

Marketing this game meant that the objective of the trailer made were formated so that the games trailer was mirrored to fit the criteria of a film trailer. The spin off sold 600,000 copies.

Some aspects can be linked to the Bandura theory and how the responses of the audience was towards the violence shown to them. This theory was tested by using a 'Bobo doll' with children to see if their reaction would be influenced once they had watched an act of violence towards the doll. It was discovered that what we consume despite the age, was what was being reflected on our behaviour in real life. Which meant that the violence being consumed off games like Assassin's creed could be criticised as they can encourage violence beyond just playing video games.

Fandom can be explored by looking at the Jenkins theory which looks at how the media texts are consumed by fans: whether there is harsh criticism about a specific product due to high expectations. This can be explained as why the makers of Assassin's creed and how they highlighted factors of improvements made to their game, shown through their trailer.
