"Most
girls" by Hailee Steinfeld shows the division between all the females that
are made by other people this maybe due to their colour of their skin or if
they have different personalities etc. This music video has a positive and some
negative representations of women. Starting with the negative you have women in
short shorts and Hailee herself wearing multiple of clothing's which show off a
lot of skin. There are also many scenes where there are close up shots which
enables the audience to see more things up close, for example their toned
bodies. Also not missing the fact that her video opens with her on
a date with an male which thinks he’s complimenting her by saying that she’s “not
like other girls” shows that in this video the representation of males are that
they judge/insult/compare the opposite gender.
A
positive representation would be that to show a variety of representations of ‘Most Girls’ Hailee
Steinfeld is then joined by more women with adjectives such as unstoppable,
fearless, fierce, powerful etc to show people that every single female has
their own personalities. However this video can also be seen as showing
examples of fit and feminine women. Hailee then carries on showing the audience
how females could be represented in four main different looks: her first look,
in a fitted sportswear doing gym like sports showing that women are strong,
second look is a short and elegant evening dress representing them as being
unstoppable and beautiful, the third look portrays her as she likes to read which
can represent the types of women who are smart and committed to what they want
to do in life and lastly the fourth look shows women who are comfortable in
their skin but also enjoy their passion in taking risks to create something
beautiful in life.
This short trailer of ‘The Other Women’ shows women as gullible
people when it comes to love. This film demonstrates how 3 women fall in love
with the same guy not knowing that he is married. He plays along with all three
women not giving anything away about the other women he is seeing until Cameron
Diaz finds out about his wife. This shows
that women believe everything the male says to them because they think they
have fallen in love (love at first sight) which is also shown in this trailer.
This trailer also gives the audience an insight to women represented as sex
objects, for example the scenes where Cameron Diaz wears a short dress dressed
as a plumber to look ‘sexy’, when the 3 women are wearing revealing swimwear’s
which the films consist of close up shots to convey this and lastly when one of
the females is jogging in her swimwear it’s shown to the audience in slow motion.
I would say that the audience this is could be aimed at
would me mostly males but can also be for 12+ (as certified). The fact that he
goes for women who has blonde hair shows a stereotype that they are ‘dumb
blondes’ and that they can easily be fooled. There is also a representation of femininity
as there are scenes where they take revenge showing them as strong and powerful
but also Cameron Diaz who is a lawyer gives the impression of women who can be ‘bossy’.
This also shows that women should be committed in a relationship but men would
be happy if they are unfaithful. In ‘The Other Women’ women are presented as emotionally
driven and crazy while men are represented as calm and wise. To finish off,
this film gives the audience an understanding of the gender inequalities and their
expectations of both genders.
